What goes where

A detector is two coils and a frame that straddles the belt. Turn it around to see how it sits on a standard conveyor: the generator coil and barge plate above the carry belt, the receiver coil between the carry and return belts, and the feet bolted to the stringers.

  • Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) posts, coil supports and braces
  • Generator coil above the belt, receiver coil below it
  • Feet sit on the stringers, midway between two idler frames

FAQ

Tramp metal detector frequently asked questions

What does a tramp metal detector do?

It senses metal carried along in the material on the belt and signals the conveyor control, so the belt can be stopped and the piece removed before it reaches a crusher, screen or other equipment downstream.

I already have a magnetic separator. Do I still need a detector?

A magnet can only pull out metal it can attract. Non-magnetic metal such as manganese steel passes straight through, and a piece buried deep in the burden can slip past a magnet too. A detector picks up what the magnet misses, so the two are normally used together.

Where on the conveyor does it go?

Over the belt, with the generator coil above the carry belt and the receiver coil between the carry and return belts. The feet bolt to the stringers midway between two idler frames, far enough upstream of the equipment being protected for the belt to stop in time.

Can you install it on an existing conveyor?

Yes. Our technicians install and commission detectors on site and can add one to a conveyor that has never had one.
