SurroundScan tramp metal detectors
Protect your assets with the last line of defence
Ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless, caught before the crusher
Tramp metal detectors help protect crushers and other downstream processing equipment from metal contaminants carried in the material stream. Accurate Industries partners with US manufacturer Advanced Detection Systems (ADS) to supply SurroundScan metal detection equipment for mining, quarrying and industrial processing applications.
The range detects ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel contaminants. With application-specific sizing and sensitivity settings, SurroundScan systems help reduce the risk of equipment damage and unplanned downtime.

Another layer of protection after magnetic separation
Tramp metal detection complements magnetic separation by identifying metal remaining in the material stream before it reaches downstream equipment. In mining and quarrying applications, detectors are often installed after magnetic separators to detect contaminants that have passed through the separation stage.
SurroundScan Protector detectors identify ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel tramp metal. When integrated with suitable plant controls, detection can trigger an alarm or stop equipment so operators can locate and remove the contaminant before it reaches the crusher.

- 1Robust
Protector models combine heavy-duty steel construction with NEMA 4 electronics enclosures for outdoor installations. Enhanced power supplies help maintain reliable operation in the presence of electrical spikes, dips and radiated noise.
- 2Intuitive
Touchscreen controls provide access to setup and adjustment. AccuLearn learns the characteristics of your material, while Product Monitor displays product and metal signal levels to help operators set appropriate detection sensitivity.
- 3Fit for purpose
Detector sizing and configuration are matched to the material stream, conveyor and target contaminants. The range includes low-profile options for restricted conveyor clearance, higher-sensitivity detection and programmable contacts for plant control integration.
SurroundScan Protector series
Choose from three Protector models according to conveyor clearance, installation requirements and the metal contaminants you need to detect. Each system is sized for its application.

Technology built into every SurroundScan
AccuLearn technology
AccuLearn learns your material's characteristics and adjusts sensitivity for the application. Product learning can take as little as 1 to 2 minutes. Detected contaminants can then be handled by the configured plant controls or separate reject equipment.
Product Monitor
With Product Monitor, you get real time signal values for your product and the tramp metal that must be detected.
Patented auto balance
Advanced Detection Systems' auto-balance software maintains perfect coil balance and optimum performance, eliminating the cost of a service technician plant visit to re-balance the metal detector.
Patented vibration technology
ProScan vibration technology monitors interference created by vibration and automatically compensates for the effect, enhancing reliability and sensitivity.
Optional accessories

A metal marker identifies the position on the belt associated with a detection event, helping operators locate the affected material for inspection and removal.

A splice sensor detects an approaching metal belt splice and signals the detector to temporarily adjust sensitivity as it passes. Splice size and design influence detection performance during this period and should be considered when selecting and setting up the system.
Remote control enclosure
An external control enclosure can place the controls in a more accessible position when the detector is difficult to reach or read.
Cabinet heater
A thermostatically controlled cabinet heater is an option for cold operating conditions, helping reduce condensation and maintain touchscreen readability.
Accessory compatibility depends on the detector model and installation. Contact Accurate Industries to confirm the appropriate configuration.

SurroundScan Defender III
The Defender III is designed for industrial processes where small metal contaminants can damage sensitive equipment or affect product purity. Typical applications include plastics and rubber extrusion. ADS specifies IP69K construction for demanding washdown environments, automatic adjustment for the product's conductive characteristics, and retention of data when power is interrupted. Each detector is sized to the application and required detection performance.
It shares the AccuLearn, Product Monitor and patented auto balance features of the Protector series.

Aperture size affects sensitivity, so the opening should be selected to suit the product and conveyor. Discuss your required ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel detection levels with Accurate Industries.
How to select the correct tramp metal detector
To help specify the right detector, tell us about:
- 1
The material being conveyed and its characteristics.
- 2
The type and size of metal contaminants you need to detect.
- 3
Conveyor belt width and speed.
- 4
Burden depth, lump size and troughing angle.
- 5
Belt splice or repair clip details.
- 6
Available frame clearance, idler spacing and installation space.
- 7
Detector location and the stopping distance before downstream equipment.
- 8
Operating conditions and the required alarm, conveyor-stop or reject response.
Integration with your existing conveyor
A successful installation starts with the conveyor layout. Belt width, material burden depth, troughing angle, available clearance and detector position all need to be considered when sizing the system. Protector LP and HD models use removable end plates to simplify installation on existing conveyor frames. The HD Ultra has a removable upright for installation without belt removal, with custom mounting plate adapters available to suit existing frames.
Programmable contacts allow integration with plant PLCs and suitable reject equipment, including divert gates or belt ploughs. The response to a detection event should be configured for your process, whether that means stopping the conveyor or operating a separate reject device. Send us your conveyor dimensions and application details so we can help select the detector and accessories for your process.

Tramp metal detectors frequently asked questions
Why do I need a metal detector?
Tramp metal detectors help protect downstream processing equipment and product purity by identifying metal contaminants in the material stream. They can complement magnetic separators by detecting remaining ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel contaminants.
Where should I put the metal detector?
For equipment protection, place the detector ahead of the equipment at risk, allowing enough distance to stop the conveyor or remove the affected material. It is often installed after a magnetic separator. The final location must also provide the clearances required for reliable detector operation.
What factors influence sensitivity?
Material characteristics, aperture size, the metal contaminant’s type, size, shape and orientation, and the operating environment all affect sensitivity. Belt splices and the settings used to accommodate them can also affect detection performance. Confirm the required detection levels for your specific application.
How do I choose a metal detector?
Start with your material, target contaminants and conveyor layout. Restricted clearance may suit the Protector LP; demanding conveyor installations may suit the Protector HD; enhanced sensitivity may call for the HD Ultra. The Defender III addresses sensitive processing and product purity applications. Accurate Industries can help assess the appropriate model and configuration.
